Fondazione Bracco is lending its support to the 2023 Olimpiadi di Fisica [Physics Olympics], which will be held in Italy for the first time on the campus of Università Statale di Milano from 12 to 16 May 2023. The event has been organized by Associazione Italiana Studenti di Fisica [the Italian Physics Students Association (AISF)], whose object is the formation of community for the dissemination of this discipline.
Bracco intends to participate at this important event through its “Mind the Stem Gap” initiative, which, by encouraging girls to take up ‘STEM’ subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), seeks to supersede gender stereotypes and contribute to the realization of the objectives set in the “Together” programme run by the Region of Lombardy.
The “Olympics” will bring 250 physics undergraduates, post-graduate and doctoral students from every corner of the globe to Milan to take part in competitions and host of other activities, including enlightening talks and meetings with experts in the field, such as, to name a few: Didier Queloz, winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics; Prof. Tiziano Camporesi, who contributed to the discovery of the Higgs Boson; Prof. Claudia Pasquero, who will talk about climate change; and Prof. Marco Liscidini, fellow of Optica. Dr. Sonia Colombo Serra, physicist and researcher at the Bracco Group will participate in the inauguration ceremony on Friday 12 May.
Of the various events and talks, we would draw your particular attention to a conference open to the public at which three internationally renowned physicists that takes place on Saturday 13 May, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Sala Verdi of the Conservatory of Milan. The three keynote speakers are:
- Alessandro Curioni, vice president of IBM Europe and director of the IBM research laboratory in Zurich,
- Federico Faggin, father of the first microprocessor in the world, and
- Paolo Milani, Professor of Material Physics at Università degli Studi di Milano, who will speak about the fine line dividing research from technology.
