Press presentation of “Beyond the portrait” art and science project

On Friday 11 October 2024, a press conference was held for the presentation of an art and science project called "Beyond the portrait": a “live” restoration of the Portrait of a young woman by Piero del Pollaiolo, one of the most iconic masterpieces of the Poldi Pezzoli Museum of Milan.
From 14 October 2024 to 31 January 2025, visitors to the Museum will be able to view the meticulous conservation and restoration work being carried out by the experts.

Supplied with ample information, the public can consider the results of the detailed scientific analysis that began in June, with support from the Bracco Foundation, the scientific partner of this project, which was made possible also by the cutting-edge technologies of Centro Diagnostico Italiano.

The project offers visitors a unique opportunity to follow the restoration directly as the restorers carry out their work live. Visitors will learn of the significant role of diagnostic imaging in the field of art conservation and restoration, and see how scientific research advances our understanding and care of our artistic heritage.

The presentation heard from Alessandra Quarto, director of the Poldi Pezzoli Museum; Tommaso Sacchi, Head of the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Milan; Diana Bracco, Chair of the Bracco Foundation, which is the scientific partner of the project-exhibition; Lydia Carrion of the Diocesan Museum of Freising, which is helping with the restoration work; and the team of restorers made up of Carlotta Beccaria, Robert Buda and Isabella Castiglioni, the last of whom coordinated the scientific analysis of the painting.
